How big are the files?/How much space do I need to store the video files?

The amount of disk space a video requires varies depending on the length and bit rate of the content. The following table gives you an idea how much storage some typical videos might take:

Table 1. Estimated disk space usage

[top]

Do you support downloading videos to Mac and Linux computers?

Currently, we support only Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista (see System requirements for the details on what these computers must provide). However, you can order videos from a Mac and Linux computer (a Mac, or a computer running Linux) and then download them to a Windows computer that has the Road Runner Media Manager already installed on it.

[top]

How do I download a purchased video to another machine?

If you are logged in, from anywhere on the Road Runner store site, click My Account. The default page that appears is My Digital Downloads. This displays a list of all the videos you have rented or purchased. For each video that you have bought, the PC Licenses Remaining column shows you how many other computers you can still download videos to. In the Assign PC for This Download column, a drop-down list shows all the computers you have installed the Road Runner Media Manager on. Click any of the other computers, select Ok, and the video will be downloaded to that machine.

If you want to delete a registered devices, click My Account and then Manage my PCs, and then click the PC you want to delete.

[top]

Can I watch my video while it is still downloading?

Yes. The time required for initial download varies. The following table gives some estimates on how long you need to wait before beginning your viewing:

Table 2. Estimated time from beginning of download process until you can begin watching a video

Length of video Connection speed
Cable (6 Mbps) Cable (3 Mbps) DSL (1.5 Mbps)
30-minute TV episode 2.5 minutes 5 minutes 12 minutes
1-hour TV episode 2.5 minutes 5 minutes 24 minutes
2-hour movie 2.5 minutes 5 minutes 60 minutes

In your Road Runner Media Manager , you will see a notification that the video has downloaded sufficiently for you to be able to watch it.

See What is progressive download? for a discussion of how this works.

[top]

How long does it take before the video is fully downloaded?

The time needed to download high-quality movies and TV shows varies depending on the size of the file and the speed of your Internet connection. In addition, media with a higher bit rate (better quality) have larger file sizes and cause the download time to be greater. A typical video might take up to an hour or an hour and a half to download fully on a standard home cable system.

Remember that you do not have to wait until the file is fully downloaded to begin watching. See Can I watch my video while it is still downloading? for estimated times.

The Road Runner Media Manager will notify you when the video has completely downloaded.

[top]

Can I watch Road Runner videos with my TV?

Perhaps. The ability to view the downloaded media on your TV depends on your computer and television, and on what connections they have in common. Video and audio connections are handled separately.

  • The most common video connection type available for both TV and computer is S-video. With an S-video connection, you can play computer videos on your TV; keep in mind, however, that you must also connect the audio from your computer to the audio on your TV. See below for information on this.

The illustration below shows what an S-video cable looks like. You can buy this at most retail stores that deal in audio and video.

  • Another common video connection type is VGA. This also requires you to connect the audio from your computer to the audio on the TV. See below for information on this.

The illustration below shows what the VGA connectors look like.

For help in determining which video connection type will work best for you, and for any help with setting the connection up correctly, talk to the hardware manufacturers for your TV and/or computer. They will be able to provide the most complete details for your hardware environment.
  • The most common audio cable used to play sound from your computer through your TV is a 3.5MM (male) to RCA (male) Y cable. This usually connects from your headphone/speaker output on your computer to the Left and Right audio inputs on your TV.

The illustration below is an example of what this cable looks like.

[top]

What is the difference between renting and buying videos?

  • Buying: When you buy a video, you own it outright, and you can watch it as many times as you like. You can download it on up to three separate computers at no extra charge.
  • Renting: When you rent a video, you have access to it for 30 days from the day you rented it. You can watch it anytime during those 30 days. Once you have started the play, however, you must complete watching within 24 hours, and you must watch it on the original computer you downloaded it to.

[top]

[top]

Where can I find titles I have purchased or rented?

The list in My Account shows you all titles you have bought or rented. In addition, in the case of titles you have bought, it keeps tracks of how many computers you have transferred content to, and how many computers are left under the terms of your license.

[top]

What is the viewing period for rented videos?

You have 30 days from the time you download the video in which to view it. However, once you start playing, you must finish viewing the video within 24 hours.

[top]

Which operating systems does Road Runner Store support?

Currently, we support only Windows XP and Windows Vista for playback of videos.

[top]

What is a progressive download?

Progressive download is a process that makes it possible to watch a media before the download has completely finished. It transfers the pieces of the file to you in the same order that they are to be played. Once a small portion of the file has downloaded, you can start watching from the beginning. While you are watching the early sections, the download continues, so most likely by the time you get to the end of the file, all its parts are fully downloaded.

Check Table 2 to get an idea how long it will be before you can start watching typical videos.

[top]

How do I update my billing and personal information?

From anywhere on the Road Runner store site, click My Account and then Account Info. Here you can edit your name, email address, address, and password and change your preference for receiving promotions and offers from Road Runner . Individualization is a Microsoft process that makes your windows PC unique by downloading and installing an individualized component from the Microsoft Individualization Service. For more information on individualization, go to Microsoft.com and do a search for "individualization." Road Runner Media Manager initiates the individualization process during installation by requesting this Microsoft Web page: http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp. You can individualize your PC yourself by going to this Microsoft URL and clicking "upgrade."

High-definition video content broadcasts at display resolutions of 1280×720 (720p) or 1920×1080 (1080i or 1080p), as opposed to Standard definition content, which tends to broadcast at resolutions of 704x480 or 640x480.

We recommend your PC meet the following specifications when viewing HD content:

See What are the system requirements for my computer to purchase and view videos? for more information.

* Please note, High Definition (HD) content may take more time to download through the Digital Media Manager (DMM) than Standard Definition (SD) content.

[top]

Why do I see a $1.01 authorization on my Credit Card?

When you submit credit card payment through our system, a temporary $1.01 authorization is processed to ensure that the credit card is valid for the charges. This $1.01 authorization is not an actual charge. Once the verification is completed, the authorization expires.

[top]

When will my items ship?

We ship all items in a single package. The package ships when all items are in stock. Most items are in-stock, and in-stock items ship one business day after we receive your order. Items that are not currently in stock need to be ordered from a wholesaler. While we do not have control over our wholesaler's delivery schedules, we try to estimate when we will have the items and be able to ship them to you. We present this information during checkout in the DVD header bar on the Review & Confirm page.

If it takes more than 30 days for an item to come in stock, we will cancel that item and ship all the rest of the items that are in stock.

Once your items ship, we send a shipment confirmation email detailing the contents of the package.

[top]

I ordered DVD and Digital items together. Why do I see two charges on my credit card statement?

Digital and DVD items are charged separately. We charge your credit card once we have fulfilled your order. While we do this immediately in the case of Digital items, the DVD portion of an order is fulfilled only once the items are shipped to you.

[top]

Do you ship to PO boxes?

Yes. To indicate a PO Box address, type PO BOX and the box number on the Address line.

Click the Standard shipping method, and your package will be delivered by the United States Postal Service.

We do not offer 2nd Day and Next Day service to PO Box addresses.

[top]

When am I charged for my DVDs?

We charge your credit card when items ship. We charge only for items that actually ship. If an item does not ship for some reason, your credit card is not charged.

[top]

How are shipping costs calculated?

We calculate shipping costs based on weight, destination, and class of service. Weights may be based on estimates. The price shown during checkout is the cost assuming that all items ship. The actual price is calculated based on the items that are ultimately shipped.

[top]

I didn’t receive all my items.

While we try to fulfill all orders, it sometimes happens that an item has been discontinued or takes a very long time to become available. In those rare cases, we wait up to 30 days for our wholesalers to provide the item, ship the items that are available, and cancel the part of your order we were unable to obtain. If this occurs, we notify you via email. Your Purchase History will also show that some items never came in stock and hence were not shipped. You are charged only for the items we send, of course.

What is a digital copy?

A digital copy is a standard-definition digital version of a movie that plays on your computer, in either iTunes or Windows Media format. It is compatible with both Macs and PCs.

[top]

How does a digital copy work?

You insert the digital copy disc into your computer, select format (iTunes or Windows Media), and type the activation code that came with your disc. You can then watch the movie on your computer or transfer the file to a device that is compatible with iTunes or Windows Media.

[top]

Why was my DVD not delivered?

  • Incorrect address

If the address on the package is incorrect or outdated, the carrier (or the unintended recipient) typically returns it to us. Be sure to check the address when you place an order.

  • The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver to the address

Some addresses are not eligible for delivery. If this is the case, we recommend that you use a PO Box address. To indicate a PO Box address, type PO BOX and the box number on the Address line. Click the Standard shipping method, and your package will be delivered by the United States Postal Service. We do not offer 2nd Day and Next Day service to PO Box addresses.

  • Improper address format

Box numbers appearing in a form that our system does not recognize may be routed to a carrier that cannot handle those addresses. Note the following:

    • If your address is a post office box, type the number as “PO BOX,” followed by the number.
    • If your address is a private mailbox, such as that provided by a local commercial mail-receiving agency, use just the number.

  • Other possible reasons

The address label might have become illegible in the process of shipping.
The carrier may have left the package at a different address then what was on the label.
Package is refused by original recipient or unintended recipient.
